Jim Wood - Singer, Songwriter
Jim who, lives in Hiawassee, Georgia, was born in Ft. Worth, Texas and has lived in Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, Montana, and Tennessee. He lived in Suches, Georgia for 22 years, where he graduated from Woody Gap, and considers Suches his hometown.
He moved to Nashville in 1996 and lived there for almost 3 years. While there, he played music and worked as a computer technician for several firms in the Nashville area. He recorded his “Black Mountain Lament” project while there with friends that play in Reba McIntire’s Band. The tape has six original songs including the title track, “Black Mountain Lament,” which was named for Black Mountain in Jim’s backyard where he grew up. Since moving back to Georgia, Jim’s group has been a fixture at the Indian Summer Festival, Sorghum Festival, Georgia Mountain Fair, square dances, and area restaurants.
Jim has been playing music since he was 9 years old. He started playing harmonica in church with his Mom, and playing square dances at the old Winfield Scott skating rink with his Dad. He often tells of playing square dances on Saturday night and then packing up the PA for use at church the following Sunday morning! He began playing guitar at the age of 12 and singing at 19. Jim is probably best known for his raucous version of “Johnny B. Goode” at the Georgia Mountain Fair, where he has been a regular for the past 10 years, and for playing “tons” of square dances in the Woody Gap Gymnasium in Suches.
Jim plays a variety of music including Bluegrass, Rockabilly, Blues, Gospel, and Country. He invites you out to an hour of acoustic music that will allow him to go back to the roots of his music in Union County. He will play a mixture of original and cover songs that cover a variety of styles and sentiment.
There is no admission charge to the concerts in The Old Courthouse; the musicians donate their time and talents. The concerts are presented by the Union County Historical Society as a public service and to keep alive the tradition of music in the old building.
