John Nix and The Nix Singers - Bluegrass and classic country
John Nix, with his brothers, started a musical group in the 1950’s which they called The Country Cousins. They are unquestionably the longest playing, active band in Union County. People tell their grandchildren about going to dances when they were young, and the Nix brothers were playing. For over sixty years, the Country Cousins have been entertaining folks at square dances, concerts, and other events throughout north Georgia, western North Carolina, and eastern Tennessee. They were the first band to play at the first Sorghum Festival and have been the house band for the festival every year since the first. They played the first night John and Jeanette Cable opened "Oprey in the Wildwood" on the Young Harris highway and played there until the building burned. Once, they shared the stage there with Porter Wagnor and Dolly Parton.
The Nix brothers, John, Clayton, and Cranford descend from Jim Townsend whose descendants all have shown great musical ability. (Hence, the name Country Cousins) Their brother, Cranford, went away to Michigan where he made a name for himself in music at a very young age, but always came home to perform with the clan whenever he could.
John is now the sole performing brother. He carries on with friends and fellow church members with the new name of The Nix Singers. John is a member of the Hall of Honor of the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame.
The John Nix and the Nix Singers concert will begin in the refurbished courtroom of The Old Courthouse on the Square in Blairsville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10.
