Highway 76 - Bluegrass
Highway 76 is a local bluegrass band that’s been together for about ten years. However they have a lot of musical time under their belts. Band members include Gerald Heaton of Morganton, on banjo and vocals. Gerald was a founding member of Johnny and Gerald and the Georgia Mountain Boys. They performed 28 years together all over the eastern U.S. Gerald’s years in and around the music industry along with his gentle words of wisdom prove to be an irreplaceable asset to the band.
Larry Nichols of Blairsville, on guitar and vocals, also has a long history in music. He performed 18 years as one of the Georgia Mountain Boys, until the group retired in the early 80’s. He also was a founding member of The Southern Comfort Band in the mid 80’s and a bluegrass group, Chattahoochee. Larry brings a lot of the music to the group; he has an amazing repertoire of songs, both old and new.
Steve Pruitt of Suches on fiddle and vocals brings many years of experience to the group. He has played with several different bands through the years including Chattahoochee and others. Steve is often called on to fill in with other groups during members absences. Steve is a great asset to the group with his ability to play all the instruments well. He has a keen ear for the music.
Dwain Brackett of Blairsville on bass guitar and vocals also comes with an extensive music background. He was a founding member of Southern Comfort with Larry, and he also was one of the founding members of Low Gap Quartet, a bluegrass gospel group, and of Chattahoochee. Dwain is responsible for a lot of the arraignments of the material, and as the bass player he is expected to keep the boys in time.
The two new members of the group hail from Suches also, William Pruitt on mandolin and Casey Crason on lead guitar. These young men have grown up together and been friends all their lives, which give them the unique advantage of predicting the others next move, as well as knowing each others ability. They have played at many local and special events, even weddings! Though they are the younger members of the band, they play like seasoned musicians.
It’s been said that Hwy76 has a style all their own. They perform many of the old standards and the newer tunes as well. They take the songs and make them their own style. They are perhaps best known for their vocal blends of bluegrass harmonies. It should be said they’re all deeply rooted in gospel music, playing at many churches in the tri-state area. You may visit them on the web at: www.hwy76.net. Come out and enjoy an evening of family entertainment bluegrass style with what the boys call “Bluegrass Music From Our Mountain Heritage”.
