AFRICAN AMERICA HISTORY AND HERITAGE IN FAR WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA (AND THE NORTH GEORGIA CONNECTION) by Ann Woodford, 4 Sessions, Thursday, May 3 - May 24, 1:10 pm - 3:10 pm

The session(s) will focus on my presentation about the history and heritage ( including the musical traditions) of the African American communities in far western North Carolina as manifested in churches, schools, and workplaces using Black church music as the narrator. It involves participants singing a call and response spiritual and, if time permits, another spiritual. I will bring along a mini traveling exhibit.

A native of Andrews, NC where she attended the one room - one teacher, Andrews Colored/Negro Elementary School through eighth grade, Ann graduated with honors from Allen High School, a Women’s Division of Christian Service-sponsored Methodist boarding school for girls in Asheville, NC.  Ann graduated cum laude, with a bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 1969.  She is a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Andrews and holds the office of Sunday School Treasurer.  Having lived in Andrews, Asheville, Athens, Pittsburgh, New York, Columbus, Los Angeles, and Atlanta, Ann has developed a love for people and public relations. Her philosophy is "If you take time to lift people up, there will be no time left to put people down."
