He was born in Ft. Worth, Texas and has lived in Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, Montana, and Tennessee. He lived in Suches, Georgia for 22 years, where he graduated from Woody Gap School, and considers Suches his hometown. He moved to Nashville in 1996 and lived there for 3 years prior to returning to his roots in Hiawassee. In 2023, Jim returned to his hills of East Tennessee. Jim has been performing since the age of nine by playing harmonica in church, and square dances at the old Winfield Scott skating rink. Jim began playing guitar at the age of twelve and singing at 19. He credits the Lord, through his Mom, Ann Chapman, and Dad, the late Wayne E. Wood, for his musical, lyrical and entertainment abilities. In his youth, he was widely known for his raucous version of “Johnny B. Goode” at the Georgia Mountain Fair, and for playing years of square dances in the old Woody Gap Gymnasium, and at Lake Winfield Scott in Suches. Since those early days, he has shared stages with innumerable well-known acts during his musical career, notably – John Anderson, Tracy Byrd, Chubby Checker, Brenda Lee, Jimmy Fortune, Mickey Gilley, Lee Greenwood, Brad Paisley, Marty Stuart, Ricky Skaggs, T. Graham Brown, The Statler Brothers, Percy Sledge, Marty Stuart, Neal McCoy, Mel and Pam Tillis, Rhonda Vincent, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Heroes - Jerry Reed, Charlie Daniels, and Mr. Ray Price. Jim is extremely honored to have been the Chairman of the Country Music Show at the Georgia Mountain Fair, and to have been “picked” to fill that role by the great Howard Cunningham – a position that “Fiddlin’ Howard” held since the band’s inception over 55 years ago. Jim was a member of the Georgia Mountain Fair Staff Band for 25 years, 14 of which as Chairman concluding with the band’s official retirement during the GMF’s 70th Anniversary in 2021. He was a regular performer at the Georgia Mountain Fair for over 40 years, and is extremely thankful for the opportunities and growth that he had while associated with the legendary institution. In addition to performing, Jim has written numerous songs, and has 3 full-length studio albums. In 1996, He recorded “Black Mountain Lament”. The collection has six original songs including the title track, “Black Mountain Lament,” which was named for Black Mountain in Jim’s childhood backyard. In 2006, He recorded “The Smoky Mountain Man,” and has 16 songs of which, Jim wrote eight. The title track is a reflection on the changes the mountains have gone through and is somewhat of a commentary for what occurred as people moved into the surrounding area. Jim has a brand new album, released in 2024, “A Place I’ve Never Been Before”. This album has 17 songs including 13 original songs. All of these albums were recorded with premier musicians, engineers and studios in Nashville. Jim considers many of these musicians friends and is fortunate to have that friendship in his career. These Albums are currently available on Jim’s website www.jimwoodmusic.com, and are also available on iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify and other streaming services. Jim plays a variety of original and standard songs, with a unique blend of original humor and the lost art of storytelling. His musical styles include Bluegrass, Rockabilly, Blues, Gospel, and Country. Byron Herbert Reece was a farmer and a writer, his books along with other local authors, are available in the gift shop.
