Blood Assurance will host a blood drive in memory of Derrick Whittle on Friday, April 11, his birthday.  The blood drive will take place at Union County Courthouse, located at 65 Courthouse Street in Blairsville, Georgia from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Derrick was a Deputy Sheriff with Union County when he tragically lost his life in a car accident on his way to a call in 2011. Since then, his parents, Jim and Sharon Whittle, along with his friends and family members, have continued to show the love Derrick had for his community by holding blood drives in his name.
Blood Assurance serves 46 counties in a 5 state region, and is the sole provider of blood and blood components for 70 healthcare facilities, including Union General Hospital. Over 440 blood donors are needed every day in order to adequately supply the region served by Blood Assurance with lifesaving blood.
To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. The process usually takes about 30 minutes and includes a complimentary snack and t-shirt. Donors are asked to drink plenty of fluids - avoiding caffeine - and eat a meal that is rich in iron prior to donating.
