Please plan to join in the festivities as we celebrate the designation of Blairsville-Union County as an Appalachian Trail CommunityTMby the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC). A special celebration ceremony is planned for March 22, 2011 to be held at the historic Walasi-Yi Center located on the Appalachian Trail at Neel Gap. City, County, and State elected officials will be on hand along with representatives of the ATC, the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club (GATC), Benton MacKaye Trail Association, Mountain High Hikers, Wednesday Wanderers, the US Forest Service, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Appalachian Education and Recreation Services, and many other hiking and conservation groups to make the designation official! There will be students from Union County Middle school on hand to help, plus music, light refreshments, guided hikes and fun! So please plan to attend and participate in this unique and exciting event! Be on the lookout for more details to follow.
