Face It, Face Mugs Are Fun! Making face jugs is an old art form dating back to the fourteenth century, but Rob Withrow has a brand new twist: he makes face mugs, too! Come to the Tri-County Women?s Connection luncheon at Monet?s in Blairsville on Wednesday, October 7th, at noon to hear how he makes them. Rob owns Smoke on the Mountain Pottery in Brasstown, N.C., where he makes hand turned pottery, but is best known for his whimsical face jugs and face mugs. He became interested in clay pottery in 1993 when he acquired an old potter?s wheel and kiln. He learned to make stoneware pottery through the many classes he took at the John Campbell Folk School where he now teaches. He built his own wood fired kiln, with the help of his community, where he can now fire over seven hundred vessels at one time. The kiln must be stoked every three to five minutes for seventy hours straight in order to fire a batch of pottery, then must cool for five days before unloading the finished stoneware. In his presentation at the luncheon, he will share his passion for his craft with us. He will be bringing a surprise door prize, too! Musical entertainment will be provided by Joyce Kelley, who has been singing since the age of ten. She has worked for the Woody Gap School, in Home Health Care, and in local factories, but is now happily retired! She and husband, Roger, have three children and five grandchildren. You are sure to enjoy her beautiful singing. Charity Brooker of Roswell, GA will share her journey in her presentation, ?What Do Women Really Want?? After home schooling her seven children, she fulfilled her ambition by earning a Doctorate in Law. She is also a counselor, an RN, and a volunteer at a Women?s Abuse Shelter.
