About Us

The John C. Campbell Folk School provides experiences in non-competitive learning and community life that are joyful and enlivening. Located in scenic Brasstown, North Carolina, the Folk School offers year-round weeklong and weekend classes for adults in craft, art, music, dance, cooking, gardening, nature studies, photography and writing. Since 1925, folks have come together here to have creative and fun learning experiences in a unique place in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Representing over 300 craftspeople, the Folk School's Craft Shop offers everything from decorative jewelry to functional fireplace poker sets made by local and regional artisans. Take home handcrafted pottery, turned wood bowls, and fiber creations like scarves and table linens. The Craft Shop is also the home of the world-renowned Brasstown Carvers. Our Craft Shop is open to visitors starting May 2, Monday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursdays.

Due to COVID-19, free Friday night concert series and dances have been suspended until further notice. Please continue to check our website to find more details on when we'll be offering this programming again.

The History Center traces the story of the Folk School from its beginning and provides an overview of Appalachian culture. It houses a collection of handcrafted objects, old documents and letters, and photographs - including those of famed photographer Doris Ulmann.

The Folk School offers numerous nature trails open to the public during daylight hours.
